About The Artist

Deborah Bassett-Maxwell

Owner and Artist

Hello! My name is  Deborah J Bassett-Maxwell who once was a natural red head, hence the name Red Mudd Studio.

It all started when I was three years old when my mom gave me my first box of 64-count Crayons, the one, with the sharpener on the back of the box. Next came colored pencils, markers, paints and art lessons. In junior high, I learned to throw clay using a standing kick wheel and the seeds where planted for a future in clay.

Today, as a studio potter you can usually find me in the studio listening to George Harrison, old CDs or Michigan Public Radio while working on stock for pop up markets, art fairs and special orders. Each year over two tons of clay is delivered to make  mugs, bowls, plates, mini hearts, and much more.

Red Mudd Studio began in a corner of the basement in 2005 with one wheel and a sink. Since then, the studio has grown to hosting Girls Night Out, wheel, and hand building classes. Raku firings are scheduled several times a year. The studio provides classes and space for clay enthusiasts to play or to a more serious approach to making small batches of work.

Currently RedMudd Studio has moved to a new location in 2021 to Port Austin, Michigan.
